New York Exit New York (NYXTNY) is a virtual world created out of six thousand photo-stills taken with a digital camera, and built entirely in a virtual reality engine called Virtools. From these, thirty-nine thousand 3D elements were extracted to create a representative New York City. It was built much in the same way as a movie set which is comprised only of facades. These combined images create an illusion of a living city that can be navigated by the spectator at the museum and art centers installations it's been exhibited.

Shodo World — Inspired by Japanese calligraphy, Martin Lenclos created a series of 3 prints, representing the New York Exit New York virtual world and its relation with the negative space around it.

Eloge Calligraphique, No. 1 — The sky was grey, the rain had created a puddle by the door step, the leafs were red, the shadows were soft, autumn had brought back poetry.

Sky Packed, No. 3 — For Shy Packed, the composition introduces the emotions felt while walking a New York City messy street, filled up with garbage bags that hadn't been picked up. The sky felt so small. All that stuff had taken over.

Plan My World, No. 2 — With Plan My World, the composition came from a mental note. Coming around a corner, I realized I had just passed half a dozen real estate agencies and as many sites under construction.

Installation at the Museum of the Moving Image, NYC (New York Exit New York©)

Installation New York Virtual

3D real-time installation created in collaboration with Toronto-based interactive art director Priam Givord. The New York Exit New York (NYXTNY) was designed as a representative New York City intersection by weaving together the city’s different dominant themes. NYXTNY is not a realistic turn-by-turn layout, but rather, it is an impressionistic representation of the streets: it leaves the spectator feeling a sense of the “New York-ness”. It tries to create something that could change the way we conceive, look at, and construct virtual space in that it is not total fantasy, but rather is based on familiar elements put together as a total vision - something that is nearly impossible in a real city.

NYXTNY at the Museum of the Moving Image, NYC — At the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC, one can freely surf a city metaphor in real time 3D projected on a giant screen using a controller or programmable sequencing of camera views loop.

NYXTNY Exhibition at Siggraph Art Gallery — In collaboration with engineer Oliver Irschitz and Peyote Inc., we created an installation using Irschitz's iTube. The interaction with the virtual world was possible using a heat sensors frame. People's hand movements are remapped to the mouse movements on the screen, and they can surf freely in real time 3D in the city metaphor.
